Ex-CM vows to make Gairsain state capital

Dehradun, Oct. 31 -- Former chief minister Harish Rawat has reiterated that if the Congress comes to power in the 2027 state assembly elections, Gairsain will be made the permanent capital of Uttarakhand.
Addressing an event in the state's summer capital, Gairsain, on Wednesday, Rawat said, "If you stand firm on your foundation and remain true to your beliefs, then no power can stop the realisation of your resolve regarding Gairsain. If this generation fails to accomplish it, the next generation will carry forward this struggle. It is my personal resolve that if God blesses me and I continue to receive your support, then Gairsain will become the symbol of Uttarakhand. What we began, I wish to complete with full strength and determination...to make Gairsain the capital and fulfil the dream that people of the state envisioned." "In a democracy, those who don't raise their voice or whose spirit does not stir, do not achieve success. My complaint is that Chamoli is not fully taking part in this struggle. If you stand at the forefront, the entire world will stand behind you."
In July, Rawat said that if people give the Congress party a chance to form the government in the 2027 Uttarakhand assembly elections, he will ensure that Gairsain becomes the state capital. Even during the statehood movement, people had demanded to name Gairsain as the capital. They argued that Gairsain being almost equidistant from both Kumaon and Garhwal divisions, it is better that the state has a permanent hill capital on the lines of Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Sikkim.
The then state government on March 4, 2020, had declared Gairsain, situated on the Dudhaatoli peak of the Himalayan region, as the summer capital of the state.
The Vidhan Sabha complex in Bhararisain spans 47 acres and is situated at an elevation of 2,380 meters above sea level, making it a cold destination year-round. During sessions, personnel including officers and staff from both the Vidhan Sabha and Secretariat in Dehradun undertake a 10-hour journey to reach the location, and return to the state capital after the conclusion of proceedings.
State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said Gairsain was declared as the summer capital under the BJP government, and the people are well aware of who has truly contributed to the state's development.
"Under BJP rule, several development projects have been announced for Gairsain. It is only the BJP that has actually contributed for Gairsain....
