Ex-BJP MLA killed in Bharatpur, 31 booked
Bharatpur, Oct. 13 -- Several villagers fled Bhonda village after former BJP legislator Atar Singh Bhadana was killed, as police launched raids to arrest those accused of attacking him over a long-running mining dispute. At least 10 people have been detained and 31 booked in the incident, superintendent of police Rajesh Meena said on Monday.
Senior police officers reached the village and additional teams were deployed to maintain law and order. Police are conducting raids to apprehend those named in the case and others allegedly involved in the attack.
"A case of murder has been registered under Section 103 of the BNS. Bhadana, a former BJP MLA from Bayana, died at Jaipur's Sawai Man Singh Hospital late Sunday night after being attacked by villagers at his mining site in Bhonda," Meena said.
Bhadana was taken to the Community Health Centre in Weir but was later referred to Jaipur after his condition deteriorated.
DGP Rajiv Sharma sought an urgent report from IG Preeti Chandra on Bhadana's murder, directing her to arrest the accused at the earliest. The report had not been submitted at the time of print.
According to the complaint filed by his wife, Kamlesh Bhadana, a group of men allegedly forcibly entered the mining premises and assaulted her husband with sticks until he became unconscious. She named 31 people in the complaint and alleged the involvement of another 70 to 80 people. The complaint also stated that those who tried to rescue Bhadana were beaten.
Police said the investigation was underway and further action would follow based on the evidence gathered. Bhadana's body was handed over to his family after a post-mortem examination, Meena said.
His security personnel, Gagan Sharma, was also injured in the incident and referred to Raj Bahadur Memorial Hospital in Bharatpur for treatment.
The attack followed a prolonged dispute over a mining lease and crusher plant near the hills of Bhonda village. Residents of Bhonda and neighbouring Raipur village had been protesting against the mining operations for nearly two years, staging sit-ins and blocking the road leading to the site on several occasions.
The villagers had allegedly accused Bhadana of using gram panchayat pasture land for the movement of vehicles associated with mining operations. The crusher plant had remained closed amid the protests, and Bhadana was reportedly attempting to restart operations with administrative support.
According to police, Bhadana resumed operations on Sunday after obtaining court permission to run the crusher plant. A large number of villagers allegedly gathered at the site, leading to a confrontation in which he was attacked.
Weir police station in-charge Dhirendra Singh said police reached the spot after receiving information about a clash between villagers and the crusher plant owner. Police are investigating the sequence of events that led to the fatal assault.
The mining lease is registered in the name of Bhadana's wife, Kamlesh Bhadana.
Congress leader Prahlad Gunjal said the killing of a former MLA from the ruling party raised serious questions about the state's law-and-order machinery. He claimed Bhadana had approached the chief minister, the chief secretary and other senior officials seeking security after receiving threats to his life.
Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasara also questioned the government's ability to protect public representatives. In a post on X, he alleged that the incident exposed the state's security failures.
Bhadana, who hailed from Haryana, represented the Bayana Assembly constituency as a BJP MLA from 2003 to 2008....
