Rudrapur, Sept. 14 -- A one-and-a-half-year-old elephant calf, Rustom, will be moved to Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) from Sanjay Chetna Van in Rudrapur of US Nagar in a day or two after forest officials received his health report from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly, officials said. The calf was rescued from the Barheni forest range in Bazpur in 2025 after forest personnel found him wandering alone. The forest department monitored the calf and made attempts to reunite him with his herd. However, after the attempts failed, the calf was shifted to Sanjay Chetna Van, located along the Nainital highway in Rudrapur. "We have received the calf's blood sample report from Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly. The report suggests that the calf is healthy and fully fit for shifting. We are searching for a suitable vehicle to transport him to CTR," said Roop Narayan Gautam, ranger, Tanda forest range under the Terai-Central Forest Division in Kumaon, on Sunday. After being brought to Sanjay Chetna Van, the calf was named Rustam. Meanwhile, another elephant calf rescued from Peepal Parao was also brought there and named Raja. The two calves were kept together and were doing well, but Raja later died due to a disease. The Sanjay Chetna Van did not have the resources required to rear an elephant.
