Elderly man's body found in Doon forest
Mussoorie, April 9 -- An elderly man was dead in a forest near the Sahaspur area in Dehradun on Tuesday, with the officials suspecting that he might have been mauled to death by a leopard while collecting firewood, an official said on Wednesday.
A team of the forest department, led by divisional forest officer (Kalsi forest division) Mayank Garg, rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident. The body of the deceased, identified as Irfan, was sent for post-mortem examination.
According to officials, Irfan had gone into the forest with his younger brother Yusuf around 7 am to collect firewood. Yusuf returned home around 10 am, but Irfan did not come back.
When the family members were unable to contact him on the phone, they went into the forest to search for him. They later found his body about 2.5 km inside the forest with deep injuries on the neck and near the eyes, leading to suspicion that he may have been attacked by a leopard.
Garg said the exact cause of death would be confirmed only after the post-mortem report.
"The victim had deep wounds on the body, but it is yet to be ascertained whether the attack was carried out by a leopard. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and the exact cause of death will be clear once the report is received," Garg said.
Forest department teams have installed camera traps and other monitoring equipment in the area and have intensified patrolling to track any suspicious wildlife movement, officials said, adding that such incidents are relatively rare in the area....
