Eight killed in two separate accidents in East UP after drivers doze off
Varanasi, April 26 -- Eight people were killed in two separate road accidents-one in Mau and one in Sonbhadra-in Eastern Uttar Pradesh on Saturday morning. Both incidents occurred when drivers reportedly dozed off, causing their respective SUVs to lose control and crash.
In the first incident, five people died when an SUV collided with a trailer after crashing into a divider near Kusumha Basharatpur on the Gorakhpur-Varanasi four-lane highway in Mau district. The victims, all onboard a Scorpio, were returning to Gorakhpur from Ranchi after attending a family wedding. The deceased were identified as Vinay Srivastava, 60, a resident of Gorakhpur; his wife, Archana Srivastava, 58; their son, Kritarth Srivastava, 27; and two drivers, Purushottam, 47, of Gaya, Bihar, and Nitish, 46. The family's pet dog was also in the vehicle.
According to police, the driver, Purushottam, dozed off as the vehicle reached Kusumha Basharatpur. The SUV first crashed into a road divider, then veered into the opposite lane, where it was struck by a trailer. The impact completely mangled the front section of the SUV, trapping all occupants.
Ghosi circle officer (CO) Jitendra Singh, along with station house officer (SHO) Sanjay Kumar Tripathi and a police force, reached the scene. After an arduous effort lasting approximately two and a half hours, a forensic team cut open the Scorpio and extricated all five bodies at 5 am. The bodies were sent to the District Hospital, Mau, for post-mortem examination. Authorities have informed the families of the deceased, and traffic flow was restored after removing the vehicles involved in the crash.
A second accident occurred in Sonbhadra district, claiming three lives and leaving four people seriously injured when their SUV overturned near a vehicle agency in the Lodhi locality under the Robertsganj police station area. Eight people were onboard the SUV, returning home after attending a marriage ceremony in the district. The deceased were identified as Jitendra Sahni, 18, Dilip Paswan, 22, and Nitesh Yadav, 27, all residents of Garh Shasanai.
The injured included Mukesh, 18, Pankaj, 17, Indresh, 14, and Chhotelal, 32. While the injured were admitted to the District Hospital, Lodhi, CO Randheer Mishra of Robertsganj said Chhotelal was referred to the Trauma Center at BHU, Varanasi, due to his critical condition. Police took custody of the deceased's bodies and sent them for post-mortem after completing legal formalities....
