Haridwar, Jan. 28 -- The state forest department has intensified patrolling and trapping efforts in parts of Pauri Garhwal district after man-eater leopards were sighted again in two villages where fatal attacks have been reported in the past fortnight, officials said on Tuesday. The steps were taken after the a one-year-old girl in Barswar village of the Jaiharikhal block and a 50-year-old man in Bada village of the Satyakhal area, were killed in leopard attacks. Senior forest officials said apart from Barswar and Bada villages, nearby habitations are also being closely monitored to ensure the safety of local residents. Lansdowne forest range officer Ramesh Chandra said that four teams comprising 18 forest personnel and guards have been deployed in Barswar village alone. "As part of the trapping exercise, 12 camera traps and two iron cages have been installed in and around the village to capture the leopard. Compensation is being provided to the family of the deceased child as per norms," he said. Officials said the leopard has been sighted multiple times in the area since the incident, prompting intensified patrolling. Sub-divisional forest officer Aisha Bisht said camera traps and solar-powered closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras have been installed in Bada village and the adjacent Sirouli village. "An expert team from the Wildlife Institute is stationed in the area to tranquilise the leopard," she said....
