Easwaran stays focused despite wait for India cap
LUCKNOW, Sept. 15 -- Batter Abhimanyu Easwaran seems to have been 'struggling against odds even though he has been a run machine in the red ball cricket in India. He has been with Team India on many occasions, including the recent five-Test match series in England, but on the benches only.
This can leave anyone frustrated but 30-year-old Easwaran's never-give-up attitude has kept him marching ahead with a consistent showing with the willow. Now, he aims to start afresh and let his bat do the talking once again. Test series on home turf against West Indies and South Africa later this year are the best opportunity for Esawarn to target.
Having scored back-to-back half centuries against England Lions this June ahead of the Test series in England, Easwaran is high on confidence ahead of the India 'A' vs Australia 'A' unofficial Tests with the first one starting on Tuesday at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium here.
"My job is to score runs as much as I can and I am looking forward to the same in the series against Australia 'A'. I am hungry for runs and don't want to remember what happened in the past. I want to start afresh," Bengal captain told HT on Sunday in an exclusive chat.
Only last October, Easwaran had back-to-back centuries here in Lucknow against domestic giants Mumbai for Rest of India in the Irani Trophy final (191 runs) and against hosts Uttar Pradesh in a Ranji Trophy game for Bengal (127*) , and he finds that those experiences will help him do well in Lucknow.
"I enjoyed batting on the surface of Ekana here on two previous occasions, I scored hundreds. I would like to continue the same even in the matches against Australia 'A'," said Easwaran, whose 7,841 runs in 103 first-class matches at an impeccable average of 48.70 speaks volumes of his calibre as a batter.
He, however, refused to set any specific target for him in the upcoming domestic season. "I don't plan too far ahead and my current focus is on India 'A' matches against Australia 'A'. I will try to give my best and make use of the opportunity," he said.
"I enjoy my cricket and always try to keep on improving my skills, get fitter, work on my game and don't bother much about selection in the Team India as this isn't in my control," he said, adding, "Playing for Team India is everybody's dream, and I am doing my job honestly towards achieving that goal."
Easwaran, who missed the season opener Duleep Trophy due to illness, believes that his technique plays an important role in his success in batting.
"Technique is a big part of my game. I have worked a lot on this even since my childhood. I know the adjustment against all types of bowlers, and I always enjoy my batting in all formats of the game. I have been scoring runs in all three formats for Bengal and I would love to continue this form in further matches this season," said Easwaran, who hails from Dehradun.
"I am happy with my cricket journey so far. I came to Bengal at the age of 10 from Dehradun and played all age group cricket before graduating to senior level. Have played for India 'A' and even was part of the Indian team in the Test match against South Africa," said Easwaran, who finds his father his biggest motivator.
"He (my father) has been the biggest motivator as well as biggest critic of my cricket and his words keep inspiring me to do well in every match. I know about his dream for me, and I will try my best to convert that dream into reality one day," he added....
