Dehradun, Sept. 30 -- An early warning system will be installed at Vasundhara Tal glacial lake in Chamoli district to help mitigate the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in Uttarakhand's high-altitude Himalayan regions, officials said. Chief secretary Anand Bardhan on Tuesday flagged off the scientific and technical team travelling to Vasundhara Tal for the installation. "The use of state-of-the-art sensors, satellite communication, and real-time data monitoring would aid in better understanding the changes occurring in glacial lakes," Bardhan said. The expedition, scheduled from September 29 to October 15, is the first scientific expedition of its kind in the state to install a monitoring and early warning system at a glacial lake, according to officials Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami extended his best wishes to the scientists, experts and security personnel participating in the expedition. The campaign is being conducted by the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) under the National Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Risk Mitigation Programme. Scientists and experts from the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee, and the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun, are part of the expedition. SDRF, NDRF and ITBP personnel will accompany the team.
