LUCKNOW, Sept. 3 -- A dispute over a Rs.50,000 demand allegedly ended with a 28-year-old woman being strangled with her dupatta, after which the accused loaded her body onto his e-rickshaw and drove to a canal to dispose it of, police said on Wednesday. "The accused, identified as Dheeraj Kumar Sonkar, 55, was arrested from his second address in the Sleeper Ground area of Manak Nagar, barely three hours after the case was registered," police said in statement. The e-rickshaw allegedly used to transport the body was also recovered. According to police, the woman, Pooja alias Parveen, had been known to Sonkar for around four-five years and frequently stayed with him in the Sleeper Ground area. The two allegedly had an argument late on August 30 after Pooja demanded Rs.50,000 from him. During questioning, Sonkar told police that he had recently purchased the e-rickshaw on loan and did not have the money. The argument continued into the early hours of August 31, when Pooja allegedly insisted on returning home and threatened him. Police said Sonkar told investigators that he lost his temper during the argument and strangled her with her dupatta. After realising that she had died, he allegedly decided to get rid of the body. "What followed was an unusual attempt at disposal. Sonkar allegedly loaded the body onto his e-rickshaw and drove towards the canal. Near the DRM culvert, he was attempting to throw the body into the canal when he noticed some people approaching from behind," the statement added. Fearing that he would be caught, Sonkar allegedly abandoned the body on the footpath beside the canal and fled. The body was subsequently found and police began investigating the case. Pooja's father, Munna Lal Mian alias Tinchu Islam, approached Manak Nagar police alleging that his daughter had been killed by Sonkar, who was living with her. An FIR was registered at Manak Nagar police station under sections 103(1) and 238(a) of the BNS. Police said evidence and other information gathered during the investigation led them to identify Sonkar as the suspect. A police team traced the accused to his second address in the Sleeper Ground, Shantipuram Colony area and arrested him on September 2, around three hours after the case was registered.
