PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 26 -- Traffic on Prayagraj's Phaphamau Bridge remained disrupted for nearly eight hours on Friday after a gravel-laden dumper met with an accident, leaving thousands of commuters stranded amid incessant rain. According to traffic police, the dumper collided with another vehicle around 4 am, causing its front portion to collapse onto the road. The damaged vehicle became wedged in the narrow lane, completely blocking traffic towards Phaphamau. The situation worsened during the morning rush hour as long queues of vehicles built up on the bridge. Two-wheeler riders and pedestrians were particularly affected, with many stranded in the rain for hours. Although the inbound lane towards the city remained open, congestion worsened as vehicles from both directions tried to use the single available lane. Traffic personnel regulated vehicle movement by intermittently stopping inbound vehicles to allow two-wheelers traveling from the city towards Phaphamau to cross. The outbound four-wheelers were diverted through Shastri Bridge, adding to traffic pressure on the Jhunsi and Sahson routes. Efforts to clear the damaged dumper continued through the morning. ACP (Traffic) Sunil Kumar Singh and ACP-II Sandeep Kumar Rai reached the spot and supervised efforts to restore traffic movement.
