DTR awaits IVRI report after rescued tigress dies hours before release
Lakhimpur Kheri, June 25 -- The sudden death of a four-year-old tigress in the Majhgain range late Tuesday evening has left authorities at Dudhwa Tiger Reserve (DTR) searching for answers.
The tigress's carcass was sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly, for a postmortem examination, and forest officials are awaiting the report to determine the exact cause of death.
DTR field director H. Rajamohan said on Wednesday that there was no lapse in handling the animal after its rescue. "All protocols were followed after the tigress was tranquilised and rescued," he said.
According to Rajamohan, the tigress regained consciousness within half an hour of tranquilisation and appeared normal thereafter.
Veterinary experts who examined the animal also found it fit and cleared it for release into its natural habitat.
However, nearly 12 hours after the rescue, the tigress died unexpectedly. "Discussions were underway regarding the location for its release when the tigress suddenly roared inside the cage and collapsed," forest officials said.
