Drunk law student in Merc mows down man
Bhubaneswar, July 15 -- A 37-year-old man was killed after a speeding Mercedes-Benz allegedly driven by an intoxicated 21-year-old law student rammed into his motorcycle near Shastri Nagar Square in Bhubaneswar, police said on Tuesday. The incident took place late on Monday. The accused, Soumya Ranjan Rath, was arrested and produced before a court on Tuesday, said Kharavela Nagar police station inspector-in-charge Debendra Biswal.
"The victim, Debiprasad Routray, an air-conditioner mechanic from Nishchintakoili in Cuttack district, died on the spot. Rath, a law student at SOA University and son of prominent builder Shiba Sekhar Rath, was driving the car at the time of the accident," Biswal added.
Police said that a girl travelling with the accused was initially sent to a short-stay home after confusion over whether she was behind the wheel when the crash occurred. "However, we sent her back to her home on Tuesday after we were clear that she was not involved in the accident," Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena said.
According to witnesses, Routray was taking a U-turn at the traffic signal at Shastri Nagar Square when the Mercedes, coming from the Nicco Park side, hit his motorcycle at high speed. "The impact reduced the two-wheeler to a mangled wreck and dragged the victim for nearly 150-200 metres before the vehicle came to a halt," said a local, requesting anonymity.
Police said a breathalyser test found 127 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood in Rath's system, more than four times the legal limit of 30 mg prescribed under the Motor Vehicles Act (MVA).
A case has been registered under Sections 281 (rash or negligent driving), 105 (culpable homicide not amouting to murder) and 106(1) (causing death by rash or negligent act) of BNS and Section 185 of MVA....
