Lucknow, Sept. 9 -- The doctors of Apex Trauma Centre of SGPGIMS removed a metal drill bit that had remained lodged inside chest of a 53-year-old man from Kushinagar for nearly 11 years. Abdul Qadir had been suffering from recurring chest pain for years but did not know its cause. His ordeal dates back to 2014, when he met with an accident and fractured his right arm. During surgery in 2015, the tip of a surgical drilling instrument used to make holes in the bone broke and travelled into his chest. For the next 11 years, he relied on medication whenever the pain intensified. He eventually reached Apex Trauma Centre with persistent pain. Investigations revealed a metallic foreign body lodged inside his chest. The operation was led by Prof Amit Kumar Singh, additional chief, Trauma Surgery, with Prof Amit Kumar, additional professor, Orthopaedics; senior residents Dr Aditya and Dr Varun Gupta; and Prof Vansh, additional professor, Anaesthesia. Director PGI professor Radha Krishna Dhiman said case highlights the possibility of retained surgical fragments going undetected and importance of investigating persistent, unexplained pain, in patients with a history of previous surgery or trauma. htc...
