Donation row: Only 45 days' CCTV backup at Ram temple, old footage not found
Ayodhya, June 21 -- Gathering digital evidence is the biggest challenge for the Special Investigation Team probing allegations of embezzlement of Ram temple donation money as only 45 days' CCTV backup is available at the temple complex and old footage has not been found, people familiar with the probe said on Saturday.
Indications of tampering with CCTV footage have also been found, which will undergo forensic examination, those privy to the matter added.
Since footage older than 45 days gets deleted at the complex, obtaining footage from several years ago is impossible. This makes it difficult to accurately determine the theft's beginning and duration, highly-placed sources further said.
The Uttar Pradesh government constituted the SIT on the request of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust on June 13. The SIT began the probe on June 15.
The SIT will now attempt to recover as much old footage as possible through forensic examination, people familiar with the probe said.
If footage was manipulated within the last one- and-a-half months, technical evidence of it is likely to come to light, they added.
Due to limited digital evidence, the investigation is now largely dependent on the statements of witnesses, suspects, and concerned officials. For this reason, the SIT's investigation is expected to be lengthy and multi-layered.
The SIT is comparing the statements of suspected employees, officials, and the previously arrested accused. Several contradictions have emerged during questioning, which are being considered an important basis for the investigation....
