Lucknow, July 18 -- Neurosurgeons at Kalyan Singh Super Specialty Cancer Institute (KSSSCI) successfully removed a life-threatening brainstem tumour from a 16-year-old boy in what doctors described as one of the most challenging brain surgeries. The family had reportedly been advised against surgery at several hospitals because of the high risk involved. The teenager from Kunda, who underwent surgery on July 3, has made a full recovery and has been discharged on Friday. The eight-hour surgery was led by Professor Vijendra Kumar, CMS and head of Neurosurgery, along with Dr Amit Kumar Upadhyay, Dr Ravi Ranjan and Dr Sanjeev, supported by the anaesthesia team headed by Dr Richa Rai. The patient had developed weakness in the limbs, difficulty swallowing, facial asymmetry and eye misalignment--warning signs of a brainstem tumour. Prof Kumar said brainstem tumours are among most dangerous neurosurgical conditions. Institute director Professor Madan Lal Bhatt said the surgery reflected the institute's growing capability to handle some of the country's most complex brain tumour cases using advanced technology.
