DNA analysis to identify bodies of 5 Vizag victims
Hyderabad, June 10 -- The authorities at the King George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday identified three bodies of the victims of the devastating accident at the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL) also known as Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on Monday evening. They added that DNA samples were collected from the bodies of the remaining five victims for ascertaining their identifies.
KGH superintendent Dr I Vani told reporters that the bodies were charred, making visual identification difficult. She said this necessitated DNA analysis. "Samples have been collected and sent to a forensic laboratory in Vijayawada. The mortal remains will be handed over to the respective families after the identification process is completed," she said.
According to hospital authorities, three victims have been identified as G Bhanu Kumar, N Venkata Ramana and N Appala Raju. Arrangements have also been made to transport the bodies to their native places once the formalities are completed.
The incident took place at the Steel Melting Shop-1 (SMS-1) unit of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant when molten steel leaked from a ladle, killing eight workers and leaving six others seriously injured. The condition of the two injured workers, who are undergoing treatment at KIMS hospital, remains critical, a steel plant spokesman said.
Meanwhile, the RINL management on Tuesday announced an ex-gratia of Rs.25 lakh to the next of kin of the each deceased employee, and Rs.10 lakh to each of the severely injured persons.
