Disabled, transgenders largely left out in FY26
New Delhi, May 18 -- Nearly seven in 10 registered disabled workers and more than nine in 10 registered transgender workers received no employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in FY 2025-26, according to a yearly report from the ministry of rural development (MoRD).
Of 1,384,964 registered disabled workers, 427,201 - or 30.8% - received employment during the year. For transgender workers, 829 of 15,176 registered (5.46%) got work. The data covers 28 states and six Union Territories.
West Bengal recorded the largest absolute gap with the state generating zero persondays of employment during the year out of 196,254 registered disabled workers.
Tamil Nadu accounted for the bulk of transgender employment nationally. The state employed 300 of its 615 registered transgender workers, a conversion rate of 48.7%. This represented 36.2% of all transgender workers employed nationally and 52.1% of all 33,541 transgender person-days generated across the country.
Maharashtra had the highest number of registered transgender workers at 3,499 - 23% of the national total - but employed only 36, an exclusion rate of 98.97%. Gujarat registered 792 transgender workers but employed only three. Haryana registered 114 transgender workers and employed none. Ladakh registered one transgender worker and provided zero days of work during the year....
