Derek: In touch with DMK, AAP before monsoon session of parl
New Delhi, July 8 -- Trinamool Congress (TMC) Derek O'Brien said on Tuesday that non-Congress opposition parties were in touch with each other to build broader floor coordination ahead of the monsoon session of Parliament.
"We are in touch with DMK, AAP and others on a regular basis. We are optimistic that all non-NDA parties will be a part of the broader floor management. It is not mandatory for all parties to attend a particular meeting in the morning. Teamwork is good," said TMC Rajya Sabha floor leader Derek O'Brien. The outreach assumes significance as the Opposition seeks to maximise coordination during the session beginning July 20. The DMK, which has 22 Lok Sabha members, has snapped ties with the Congress after the latter decided to support the TVK government in Tamil Nadu. AAP, meanwhile, faces a direct contest with the Congress in the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections and said last month that it has exited the INDIA grouping.
According to a person familiar with the discussions, Opposition parties are attempting to build consensus around issues that could also find support from the DMK and AAP. These include the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and what Opposition parties describe as an assault on democratic institutions. The coming session is expected to test the Opposition's ability to coordinate against the NDA as the government seeks to advance its legislative agenda.
A second person said the NDA leadership has also indicated that once it secures a two-thirds majority in both Houses, it could reintroduce the Constitution amendment Bill on increasing the strength of the Lok Sabha....
