AGRA, July 31 -- What was meant to be a funeral turned into a moment of disbelief for a family in Agra after a 70-year-old woman, who had been declared dead by doctors, reportedly regained consciousness just before her cremation. The incident occurred in Shri Nagar Colony in the Trans-Yamuna area on Wednesday evening. According to neighbours, the family had completed preparations for the last rites after Sheela Devi's "body" was brought home from a Bareilly hospital in an ambulance. Rakesh, a neighbour, said relatives had gathered and the cremation material was ready when a family member touched Sheela Devi's feet. "She suddenly responded and opened her eyes, leaving everyone stunned," he claimed. Similar accounts were shared by other neighbours, and purported videos of the incident circulated widely on social media on Thursday. Doctors, however, ruled out any possibility of a person coming back to life after death. Dr Prashant Gupta, principal of SN Medical College, Agra, said it was likely that Sheela Devi had never actually died. "Sometimes vital signs are extremely weak and may not be detected initially. If the heart starts functioning again, it can appear as though the person has come back to life. Medically, a dead person cannot revive," he said. A widow, Sheela Devi had been living with her son Sunil Mahour in Agra. Around 20 days ago, she went to stay with another son, Sanjeev Mahour, in Badaun while undergoing treatment. She was admitted to a private hospital in Bareilly on Monday. Doctors declared her dead on Wednesday morning, following which the "body" was taken to Agra. However, after she reportedly regained consciousness at home, she was rushed to a private hospital in Agra, where she was undergoing treatment at the time of filing this report. According to daughter-in-law Barkha, Sheela Devi had undergone a liver surgery in Delhi two months ago. She was later admitted to the Bareilly hospital.
