Debt-ridden delivery worker held for ATM break-in bid
Lucknow, April 18 -- Police arrested a 21-year-old Zomato warehouse team leader who allegedly tried to break open an ATM after incurring losses of over Rs.6 lakh in the stock market and cryptocurrency.
The accused, Gulshan Kumar of Sher Shah village in Unnao, was held in connection with an attempted ATM break-in on April 11 in Banthra. ACP Krishnanagar Rajneesh Kumar said Gulshan had prepared in advance, procuring tools and watching online tutorials, including AI-based content, to learn how to break into an ATM.
"He arranged a crowbar and cutter and rehearsed their use. This was not entirely impulsive," Kumar said. The attempt took place at a Hitachi ATM booth in Pahadpur, where CCTV footage showed a helmeted man damaging the machine for nearly seven minutes. Despite repeated strikes, he failed to breach the cash vault and fled.
Police said Gulshan, who had a love marriage in 2024 and lived separately in rented accommodation, was under financial stress. Tools and a motorcycle used in the attempt have been recovered. htc...
