Dehradun, Aug. 25 -- Ongoing work to fix the skewed geometry of the the under-construction Silkyara-Barkot tunnel in Uttarkashi was disrupted by a sudden rush of debris on Friday, officials said on Monday. They added that no damage was caused and no one was hurt. "The geology in that section is also poor, and this work is nearing completion, with only about 100 metres left. As per the approved drawing, we were carrying out work to correct the geometry. This is a loose portion, and there are a few such locations," said Ravi Kant , general manager (projects) for the executing agency Navayuga Engineering Company Limited. He said such incidents are normal during the work, although the debris was slightly larger than usual. "A larger loose portion opened up. We are putting a rim around the area and filling it," he said. In July, a 22-year-old worker was killed after a section of the concrete lining inside the 4.5-km-long tunnel, which is part of the Char Dham all-weather road project, collapsed. The tunnel was also in the news in November 2023 when 41 workers were trapped there for 17 days. The firm is building the tunnel on behalf of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corp Ltd (NHIDCL) at a cost of approximately Rs.1384 crore. It will reduce the distance between Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines by 26 kilometers. Meanwhile, officials said work on the tunnel is expected to be finished by March next year. Kant said the project faced several challenges because of the area's unstable geology. "The geology encountered during construction was completely different from what was recorded in the study before the commencement of the project. The geology varies metre by metre," he said, adding that the tunnel was currently around 76% complete. "It could be thrown open to the public most probably by July next year," he said. Kant said the company debated the project's feasibility after the November 2023 incident. "The geological and geotechnical parameters were very poor. Because of the poor geology, we had to provide additional support, which reduced the pace of work.... Retrofitting and rework also had to be carried out, which delayed the project," he said....
