KANPUR, Sept. 8 -- The daughter-in-law of pharmaceutical trader Vineet Vinocha was arrested in Kanpur on Monday in connection with his murder after the businessman's employee and an alleged accomplice told police that they had killed the businessman at her behest, police said. Police said they were investigating allegations that the woman, Shalu Vinocha, 30, ordered a hit on her father-in-law to end his tight control over the household's finances. Vineet Vinocha, a prominent Kanpur-based medicine trader, was stabbed 26 times inside his flat at Ratan Orbit apartment in Kalyanpur on Saturday night. Kanpur's deputy commissioner of police (West) SM Qasim Abidi confirmed Shalu's arrest following disclosures by the employee, Vishal Gautam, 30, and his alleged accomplice Raj Kishore, 30. The DCP said daughter-in-law was allegedly behind the conspiracy. Vishal and Raj Kishore were arrested late Sunday night after sustaining leg wounds during an alleged encounter with the police. The arrests made on Sunday evening led to the breakthrough. When the accused were interrogated, their statements pointed towards the daughter-in-law's involvement. Police investigators were checking Shalu's statement against her call detail records and other evidence. Her role in the murder is yet to be established. During questioning, Shalu allegedly told the police that she and her husband had little control over their finances and that, like their employees, they were given a fixed monthly amount and had to request any additional amount from Vineet. According to police, Vishal told investigators that he killed Vinocha for money after being asked to do so by the businessman's daughter-in-law. "The role of the daughter-in-law came to the fore during questioning of the two arrested accused. It was revealed that the conspiracy for the murder was hatched over 15 days ago and the daughter-in-law helped the two men gain access to the building. One of the accused, Vishal Gautam, was an employee at the family's medicine shop for over 12 years. This is how he became acquainted with the family and the daughter-in-law. He also used to visit their residence for domestic work. All aspects of the case are being investigated," Abidi said. "The conspiracy began when the daughter-in-law approached Vishal and made him an offer. She promised him Rs.2 lakh after the incident and another Rs.4 lakh later, taking the total promised amount to around Rs.6 lakh. Vishal subsequently agreed to the plan," Abidi said. According to the officer, the alleged motive was also linked to a camera installed inside the house. "A camera was installed in the house. The freedom she (the daughter-in-law) had after installing the camera was being curtailed," he said. Police are also looking into the alleged role of a third suspect in the murder. Police said the businessman was killed between 10.30pm on Saturday and 3am on Sunday when Vineet's son, daughter-in-law and grandson had gone to a party. When they returned, they found the main door of the flat open and Vineet's body lying on the floor of a room. Police are examining CCTV footage from inside and outside the apartment. The footage showed two men entering the flat. One of them was later identified as Vishal. At around 11.29 pm, a man was also seen arriving near a neighbour's flat to deliver something. A short while later, Vishal was seen coming out of Vinocha's room and leaving the flat, followed by another man whose face was covered. Ratan Orbit security in-charge Madan told police that Vishal, a resident of Mathuri Mohal in Harbansh Mohal, had reached flat C-104 with Raj Kishore. When he asked to be allowed inside, Madan initially refused. Vishal then spoke to Shalu over the phone. She allegedly told the security guard to let them in, saying that the men had come with medicines. Abidi said Vinocha was among the top five medicine traders in Kanpur. He ran Pharma Traders on Birhana Road with an annual turnover of over Rs 40cr.
