Meerut, Sept. 4 -- Dalit leader Ravi Gautam on Thursday began an indefinite hunger strike at Commissionery Park in Meerut, intensifying his protest over a series of demands, including the dismissal of IPS officer and former Meerut SSP Avinash Pandey. Gautam has been staging an indefinite sit-in at the park since August 20, protesting the police action and alleged assault during a demonstration outside the Collectorate on July 8. He has accused the police of brutality during the July 8 incident and alleged that the treatment meted out to him amounted to an insult to the Dalit community. He has maintained that the issue is no longer limited to his individual case but concerns the dignity and rights of the wider Dalit community. Soon after Gautam began his hunger strike on Thursday, several workers of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Dr BR Ambedkar) reached Commissionery Park in support of his agitation.
