PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 13 -- In a suspected case of cyber fraud, miscreants allegedly withdrew Rs 4.91 lakh from two bank accounts of a resident of Pratapgarh district without using links, messages or one-time passwords (OTPs). Police registered a case and launched an investigation. According to the complaint, Kailash Nath Pandey, a resident of the Sadha police station area, has a savings account at ICICI Bank's Pratapgarh branch and a current account at the bank's Kanpur branch. He alleged that a total of Rs 4,91,616 was withdrawn from the two accounts between noon and 4 pm on September 9. Pandey said he neither clicked on any suspicious link nor shared any OTP or banking credentials. He learned about the unauthorised transactions only after receiving withdrawal notifications on his mobile phone. After discovering the withdrawals, he immediately contacted the bank's customer care service and requested that both accounts be blocked. He later lodged an online cyber fraud complaint and submitted a written complaint at Patti Kotwali, seeking recovery of the amount and action against those responsible. Based on the complaint, police registered a case and began an investigation. Officials are examining the transaction details and the possible method used by the fraudsters to access and withdraw the money from the accounts. Station house officer (SHO) Anandpal Singh confirmed that a case had been registered based on the complaint and further investigation was underway. Police are coordinating with the bank and cyber experts to trace the transactions and identify the accused. A gold artisan from West Bengal has allegedly fled with gold worth nearly Rs 95 lakh entrusted to him by jewellery traders in the Bharwari area of Kaushambi to prepare designer ornaments. The incident has shocked local bullion traders, who have approached the police seeking action. According to a complaint submitted at the Bharwari police outpost on Saturday, the accused artisan, a resident of the Tolpur police station area in Hooghly district, West Bengal, had been living with his family in a house behind the outpost for several years. He was engaged in making designer jewellery and regularly received gold from local traders to manufacture ornaments in exchange for labour charges. The complainants alleged that more than a dozen jewellery traders from Bharwari and nearby areas had handed over gold to the artisan for making jewellery. However, they recently discovered that he had allegedly disappeared with his family, taking gold valued at approximately Rs 95 lakh. The aggrieved traders visited the police outpost and submitted a formal complaint. They have demanded the recovery of the gold and strict legal action against the accused. SHO of Kokhraj police station Santosh Kumar Sharma confirmed that the bullion traders had submitted a complaint. He said police had initiated an investigation and were trying to trace the accused artisan. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged fraud and verifying the traders' claims regarding the quantity and value of the gold entrusted to the artisan.
