Criminal hurts self in lockup, blames cop for injury
PRAYAGRAJ, March 11 -- :A notorious criminal lodged in Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj created chaos inside the district court lockup in Pratapgarh on Tuesday after a dispute with another inmate. The accused allegedly banged his head against the wall and accused a police constable of assault, leading to a commotion inside the court premises, officials said.
According to police officials, the accused, Haleem, a resident of the Mirabhavan locality under Nagar Kotwali police station area, has been lodged in the Central Jail in Naini, Prayagraj for nearly 14 years in several serious cases including murder, extortion and robbery. On Tuesday, the Prayagraj Commissionerate police brought him to the district court in Pratapgarh for a scheduled hearing.
During his stay in the lockup, Haleem reportedly got into an argument with another inmate. A constable opened the lockup gate in an attempt to calm the situation. However, Haleem allegedly started creating a scene and repeatedly hit his head against the wall inside the lockup, claiming that the constable had assaulted him.
On receiving information about the incident, court security in-charge Azad Singh, circle officer Shivnarayan Vaishya and the Nagar Kotwali police station's SHO rushed to the spot.
Meanwhile, women members from the accused's family also reached the court premises and allegedly attempted to argue with police personnel and used abusive language. Lawyers present at the court intervened and drove the family members out of the premises.
After Haleem sustained a head injury and started bleeding, police took him to the Medical College hospital for first aid and treatment.
Circle officer Shivnarayan Vaishya said that CCTV footage from the lockup area will be examined and appropriate action will be taken after investigation. Haleem, among other crimes, is accused of orchestrating the murder of an iron trader, Mahadev Kesarwani, in 2018 near Sadar Bazaar of Pratapgarh after the businessman allegedly refused to pay an extortion amount of Rs.10 lakh....
