Haldwani, May 21 -- The Uttarakhand Excise department on Wednesday launched a crackdown on illegal liquor manufacturing units operating in forested areas and villages of Bazpur in Udham Singh Nagar district, officials said. According to Excise Inspector Mahendra Singh Bisht, raids were conducted in Barhaini, Beria Daulat and Madhiya Hattu villages, where illegal liquor was found being produced. "The excise team discovered illegal liquor being produced during the raid. On the spot, two illicit kilns were dismantled. A total of 30 litres of illegal liquor was seized, while around 3,000 kg of lahan (fermented mixture used for liquor production) was destroyed. Equipment used in liquor manufacturing was also confiscated," Excise Inspector Mahendra Singh Bisht said. He added that one FIR has been registered against the accused under Section 60 of the Excise Act. However, those involved managed to flee before the raid. "Efforts are underway to identify and arrest the accused. We appeal to villagers to inform the department about such illegal activities," he said....
