LUCKNOW, Aug. 15 -- Congress workers took out a protest march on Friday condemning the alleged "purification" of the venue where party national president Mallikarjun Kharge had recently addressed a public meeting in Haldwani, Uttarakhand. "It is a clear reflection of the discriminatory mindset fostered by the BJP. This shameful and regressive act is not merely an insult to the Congress president but a direct assault on the dignity of crores of Indians and on the constitutional values of equality, fraternity, social justice, and human dignity," UP Congress president Ajay Rai said. On the call of the All India Congress Committee and Ajay Rai, marches and Satyagrahas were organised by all district and city Congress committees across the state to protest against the "highly condemnable" incident, according to a press statement issued by the party's state unit. In Lucknow, a march was organised from the UP Congress headquarters. The march proceeded towards the statue of the Mahatma Gandhi at the GPO. Rudra Daman Singh, president of the District Congress Committee (Lucknow), Amit Srivastava, city president of Lucknow North, Anamika Yadav, Sushila Sharma and others were present. However, en route, before Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, Congress workers were stopped by a heavy police presence.
