Cong workers clash with cops over Thukral FIR
Rudrapur, Aug. 26 -- A clash broke out between Congress workers and police personnel at the SSP office here in US Nagar district on Tuesday after party workers gathered to protest against an FIR registered against former MLA Rajkumar Thukral and a subsequent midnight police raid at his residence.
The FIR was registered following a heated exchange between Thukral and BJP MLA Shiv Arora during a meeting convened by the commissioner of Kumaon at the collectorate on Monday to review cases related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Following the registration of the case, police raided Thukral's residence in Alliance Colony on Kashipur Road around midnight on Monday. Thukral was not present at the house at the time.
The FIR and the police raid triggered protests by Congress leaders and workers, who gathered at the SSP office on Tuesday. Congress MLA Tilak Raj Behar also joined the protest and staged a dharna.
"BJP MLA Arora and Thukral had an altercation. Arora should have lodged an FIR against Thukral. Why did an officer file the case? The sections in the FIR are bailable. Even then, why did the police raid Thukral's house at midnight like he was a criminal?" Behar said.
The Congress protest was called off later on Tuesday.HTC...
