Jaipur, Aug. 17 -- The Congress on Sunday staged a protest against the urban development (UD) tax, garbage collection user charges and what it described as deteriorating civic infrastructure in the state capital, demanding withdrawal of "additional charges" being imposed on residents. The Jaipur city unit of the party organised a 'Jaipur Bachao March', which began from Chandpol Circle at around noon and concluded at Badi Chaupar. A large number of Congress workers and office-bearers participated. Ex-minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, Jaipur City Congress president Sunil Sharma, MLA Rohit Bohra, MLA Amin Kagzi, former MLA Ganga Devi and Congress leader Pushpendra Bhardwaj were among those who joined the march. Congress leaders alleged that instead of improving basic civic services such as sanitation, roads and drainage, the government was increasing the financial burden on citizens through new charges. They demanded immediate relief for residents and withdrawal of what they called unnecessary fees. Khachariyawas said Jaipur, as Rajasthan's capital, should have better civic infrastructure, but residents were facing serious problems, particularly during heavy rains when several areas become waterlogged. Questioning the garbage collection user charge, Khachariyawas said residents were already paying municipal-related charges through water bills and were also paying UD tax. He alleged additional charge of up to Rs.5,000 was now being imposed in the name of garbage collection.htc...
