Jaipur, Sept. 19 -- The Jaipur city district Congress committee has sought security and unhindered participation of its elected councillors in Saturday's mayoral election, alleging that several party candidates were manhandled and removed from counting centres after raising objections over the counting process. In a memorandum to the Jaipur police commissioner, district Congress president Sunil Sharma alleged that in at least seven cases during counting, Congress candidates who were leading were declared defeated by narrow margins. When they raised objections and sought recounting, they were allegedly pushed, manhandled and removed from the counting centres instead of their complaints being heard. The Congress has expressed apprehension that similar incidents could occur during the mayoral election. It sought measures to ensure its councillors can reach the election venue, vote and return without obstruction. The party alleged that councillors could face pressure, intimidation or police action to prevent them from participating. It said detaining a councillor, taking them to a police station or stopping them en route with the intention of preventing them from voting would amount to interference in the electoral process. The Congress sought written instructions to police officers and station house officers concerned not to threaten, forcibly take away or unlawfully detain any Congress councillor under political pressure. It also sought arrangements for uninterrupted movement, entry, voting and exit, saying security checks should not be used to unnecessarily delay councillors. The party demanded that a senior police officer be designated as a nodal officer to respond immediately to complaints of councillors being stopped, threatened or pressured, and sought the officer's name and contact details before the election.
