Cong MLA gets death threat; FIR registered
Dehradun, Aug. 22 -- Congress MLA from the Manglaur assembly constituency in Haridwar district Qazi Mohammad Nizamuddin received death threats from an unidentified person, who allegedly sent video clips and messages to him on WhatsApp, police said on Friday, adding that an FIR has been registered against an unidentified person under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Manglaur police station.
The video sent to the MLA shows a masked man issuing death threats, according to the police.
Nizamuddin, in his complaint to the police, said the unidentified person sent objectionable audio and video content as well as messages that allegedly hurt religious sentiments to his WhatsApp account from two different mobile numbers.
Circle officer Manglaur Abhinay Chaudhary said, "The MLA alleged that an unidentified person sent him death threats on his WhatsApp.
The accused sent him videos threatening him as well as text messages.
We have registered an FIR against an unidentified person at Manglaur police station and begun our investigation into the matter."
"We are trying to trace the mobile numbers with the help of the cyber cell. The accused will be arrested soon," he said.
Qazi Mohammad Nizamuddin defeated the BJP's Kartar Singh Bhadana by a slender margin of 422 votes in the 2024 bypoll, securing his fourth win from the seat.
He had earlier won the constituency twice on a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket and once as a Congress nominee.
The Manglaur assembly seat had fallen vacant after the death of sitting BSP MLA Sarwat Karim Ansari on October 30, 2023.
