Cong corners BJP over Doon's traffic problem
Dehradun, April 15 -- The Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (UKPCC) targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, calling the push for the Delhi-Dehradun expressway an "election gimmick" and raising concerns over the increased traffic that the expressway would cause in Dehradun.
The party said the state capital is already struggling to deal with traffic, and the government has plans to increase road connectivity within the city.
Former chief minister Harish Rawat said the opening of the expressway ahead of elections appeared politically driven.
While welcoming the project, Rawat said the government has failed to address the likely rise in traffic congestion within Dehradun.
"We need expressways, but internal road connectivity also needs to be improved. Otherwise, Dehradun will face more traffic jams and bottlenecks," he said.
He added that while the BJP claims travel time between Delhi and Dehradun will be reduced to about 2.5 hours, commuting within the city could take longer. "They claim one can reach Delhi in 2.5 hours, but it may take three hours to travel from one point to another within Dehradun," Rawat said.
UKPCC secretary Rajiv Kumar said PM Modi made "unfulfilled promises" to the people of the state.
Kumar said that during the 2022 assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Modi had made several promises to the people of Uttarakhand, who, in turn, gave a decisive mandate to the BJP with the expectation that these commitments would be honoured. "However, today the people of Uttarakhand feel let down as the BJP governments have not moved a step forward in fulfilling those promises," he said.
BJP MLA Vinod Chamoli said the expressway will act as a lifeline for the state in the future and accelerate its development, adding that it is a moment of happiness for the people.
"It is natural that whenever there is development, the Congress feels disappointed," he said.
Women Congress workers, led by Uttarakhand Pradesh Mahila Congress president Jyoti Rautela, were detained by the police while attempting to march and submit a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on state's "deteriorating" law and order situation.
The police stopped the protesters at Madhya Brahmanwala Chowk on Kargi ISBT Road. The protesters raised slogans of "PM go back" during the demonstration. Police later detained Rautela along with other protesters and took them to the police lines to control the situation....
