Cong 'rattled' fearing poll loss: BJP; Oppn hits back
Dehradun, Oct. 5 -- The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday alleged that the Congress was "rattled" by the final electoral rolls published after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and was making allegations out of fear of an impending defeat in the upcoming elections in the state.
BJP spokesperson Suresh Joshi said nearly 900,000 names were removed from the electoral rolls during the SIR exercise and alleged that the Congress's earlier claims of irregularities in the revision were disproved by the final rolls.
"The Congress had alleged that the government and the Election Commission (EC) were committing irregularities during the revision of electoral rolls. It first claimed that irregularities were taking place in areas where a particular community has a significant presence and that their names were being deleted. However, most of the reduction in the number of voters has taken place in the hills, where the population of that community is not significant," Joshi said.
He alleged that the Congress attempted to create confusion and promote caste and religious politics over the revision.
"There is transparency and clarity in the electoral rolls. All the allegations made by the Congress have been proved baseless," he said.
Joshi said the electoral rolls were revised transparently by the EC and that the upcoming elections would be held on the basis of the revised rolls.
"They are worried because the irregularities they had allegedly made in the voter list have been corrected. They know that their defeat is certain and that is why the Congress is rattled," he said.
Congress, however, hit back at the BJP, alleging that the SIR exercise exposed irregularities in the electoral rolls.
Senior vice-president of the Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee Suryakant Dhasmana said people across the state and the country were now understanding why BJP leaders "start squirming" whenever questions are raised about the functioning of the EC.
Dhasmana alleged that senior BJP leaders were responsible for "vote theft" and said the party was now in a state of panic after the issue has been exposed.
"The fact that whenever anyone talks about the irregularities and scam in the SIR conducted by the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the BJP comes out in defence of the EC and the CEC shows their concern," he said.
Reacting to the BJP's endorsement of the final electoral roll released by CEC on Saturday, Dhasmana said the Congress already expressed its objections over the deletion and addition of names through what it described as illegal changes in Form 6 and Form 7 across the country.
"Our demand is clear. Assembly-wise details of all changes made after the 2022 electoral roll should be provided to all political parties. We stand firm on this demand," he said.
More than 826,000 names were removed from Uttarakhand's electoral rolls during the SIR exercise, compared with the pre-SIR electorate of over 7.96 million.
The final electoral roll published on Saturday showed 7,158,949 electors, including 3,737,701 men, 3,421,036 women and 212 third-gender voters....
