Meerut, Sept. 11 -- In a move to strengthen counter-terrorism efforts, an Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) unit will soon be established in Sambhal, a city categorised as highly sensitive. ATS Inspector General Prem Gautam has issued the order, police superintendent Krishan Kumar Bishnoi confirmed. For now, the unit will function from the Satyavrat police outpost near Jama Masjid. A permanent office is planned on three bighas of land at Hallu Sarai after encroachments are cleared. Sambhal has been categorized as an extremely sensitive city due to past terror-related activities. Officials confirmed that two individuals from the area have previously served sentences for involvement in such activities. "The establishment of the ATS unit is crucial given the city's vulnerability," SP Bishnoi noted. The decision follows violent clashes in November 2024 during a survey over claims that Jama Masjid was built on a temple site. Authorities had set up the Satyavrat outpost after the unrest, which now serves as the control room and CCTV hub. This will be the first ATS field unit in the Bareilly police zone. Currently, only Meerut, Noida, and Saharanpur have active units in western UP.
