Dehradun, Aug. 31 -- Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday held a review meeting with senior officials, all district magistrates and the police to take stock of ongoing disaster relief work in the state. Five people were killed and 11 others reported missing after a cloudburst led to flash floods and mudslides swept through parts of Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri Garhwal and Bageshwar districts on the intervening night between Thursday and Friday. Several houses were damaged by debris, in addition to damage to the fields and livestock. In Rudraprayag, eight people were still missing as rescue teams continued their search for them on Saturday. One person was killed and eight others reported missing from Basukedar and Jakholi tehsils of Rudraprayag district due to mudslide induced by heavy rainfall. Rudraprayag district information officer Vireshwar Tomar said rescue teams were yet to trace the eight missing people, while relief efforts were underway. "Nodal officers have been deployed in disaster-affected areas and essential assistance is being provided," he said. Rudraprayag district supply officer KS Kohli said the administration has sent food packets, 5,000 water bottles, 5,000 snack packets and 250 additional ration kits to families affected in the Tal Jaman area. He added that relief material would continue to be dispatched as required to ensure no family faces shortage of food or water during the crisis. In Bageshwar's Kot Posari, rescue teams recovered another body from the debris on Saturday. Two people were killed and three others reported missing after a cloudburst in Kot Posari on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. District Magistrate Ashish Bhatgain said a joint team of the district administration, police, NDRF, SDRF recovered the body of Ramesh Joshi. He said the search operation for the two missing people was underway. According to officials, they were distributing relief and ration kits to affected families. PWD teams are clearing debris from damaged houses and repairing footpaths, while other departments are assessing the damage, they said. Meanwhile, the CM directed all concerned departments to work in close coordination and assured that the state government "stands with the disaster-affected at every step." "Immediate financial assistance of Rs.5 lakh each is being provided to affected families in disaster-hit areas," he said. He instructed officials to ensure timely distribution of ration and essential daily-use items, continuous monitoring of river water levels, and quick reopening of blocked roads. The CM also directed the use of machines to clear debris from the Yamuna River near Syanachatti and ensure its safe disposal. He also asked departments to expedite repair and improvement work on all roads as soon as the rainy season ends. With a surge in Chardham Yatra pilgrims expected after September 15, Dhami said all arrangements must be put in place beforehand.
