GORAKHPUR, Sept. 22 -- Rising water levels in the Rapti, Rohni, and Ghaghra rivers have worsened flooding in Gorakhpur and parts of the Basti division. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday directed divisional commissioner Anil Dhingra to inspect affected areas and monitor embankment damage. A breach of over 30 meters was reported near Gahasand and Kaliya in the Gorakhpur Industrial Area, prompting deployment of more than 100 workers to prevent further damage. Irrigation department Superintendent engineer KO Singh said seepage developed near Uttar Sorh overnight, increasing erosion of the embankment. District magistrate Deepak Meena ordered round-the-clock monitoring as floodwaters entered Takiya Ghat and Bahrampur. The Rapti is 90 cm above danger level, the Rohni 91 cm at Bhurabari, and the Saryu one metre above the red line at Barhaj. Chief engineer (irrigation) Vikas Kumar Singh noted that water from the Rapti could not be diverted into the Ghaghra, already above warning levels, increasing pressure at several points. District disaster management officer Gautam Gupta said 33 villages are affected, making movement difficult.
