Dehradun/Mussoorie/Pithoragarh, Sept. 2 -- Door-to-door population enumeration began in Uttarakhand's snow-bound high-altitude regions on Tuesday, with census teams braving heavy rain to reach remote settlements and record details of residents as part of the national population census exercise. The exercise was inaugurated in Mana village of Chamoli district, near the Indo-China border, popularly known as India's first village. Census teams also began enumeration in Niti village and other snow-bound areas of Chamoli, while similar exercises were undertaken in Gangotri Dham and Mu- khba village in Uttarkashi district. The special exercise covers 131 snow-bound villages and three towns-Badrinath, Kedarnath and Gangotri-across Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Pithoragarh districts. A total of 182 trained personnel, comprising 139 enumerators and 43 supervisors, have been deployed for the exercise. Eva Srivastava, director, Census Operations, Uttarakhand, said trained enumerators and supervisors had begun visiting households in their assigned enumeration areas to collect population-related information. In Mana, the exercise began amid torrential rain. Mahendra Arya, naib tehsildar, Joshimath, and in-charge of population census for the snow-bound areas, said the supervisor of one of the house-listing blocks started door-to-door population enumeration by asking the prescribed questions and entering the responses through the Population Enumeration (PE) app....
