CEC inspects poll booths in border areas
Dehradun, May 24 -- Chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Saturday began a two-day visit to Uttarakhand.
As part of the first day's schedule, Kumar inspected polling booths in Uttarkashi district's border areas and reviewed preparations concerning the upcoming special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
State chief electoral officer BVRC Purushottam welcomed Kumar at Uttarkashi's Jhala helipad, from wherein they proceeded to inspections in remote and strategically sensitive areas, including Harsil in the Gangotri assembly constituency, close to the border with China.
At Harsil, Kumat met booth-level officers (BLOs) and reviewed ground-level preparations for the SIR. He examined mapping work and the use of the BLO application meant to identify and update voter records.
Officials said the CEC appreciated BLO Mintu Devi for her work and described her performance as inspiration for the entire country. He added that the dedication of BLOs strengthened the electoral system's credibility and efficiency.
Kumar said that "technology-enabled tools such as the BLO application are helping improve transparency and ensure more accurate voter lists at the grassroots level". He emphasised that while eligible voters must be included without delay, the integrity of the electoral roll must be maintained through systematic verification.
During his visit, Kumar also visited a special polling booth set up in Gangotri for sadhus and saints. He interacted at length with the ascetic voters present. He appreciated their enthusiastic participation in the democratic process despite difficult terrain and harsh weather conditions.
