LUCKNOW, Sept. 16 -- The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested two senior officers of the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Lucknow, along with two representatives of a Kolkata-based private company for alleged give-and-take of a Rs.4 lakh bribe in exchange for a favourable inspection report for the firm's plant and machinery, informed senior CBI officials while sharing a press note on Tuesday. The press note stated that the arrested RDSO officials were identified as Ashutosh Kumar, deputy director, and Deepak Kumar, senior section engineer. The two private-sector accused are Sashank Agarwal and Swarup Kumar Rai, representatives of Kolkata-based Utkarsh India Limited. The CBI registered a case on Tuesday following allegations that the two public servants, allegedly in conspiracy with the private company representatives, demanded and obtained an undue advantage from the company in connection with the inspection of its factory. Acting on the allegations, the agency laid a trap at a hotel in Howrah, where all four accused were allegedly caught, the CBI said. During the operation, investigators also recovered and seized an additional Rs.4.73 lakh in cash, besides the alleged bribe amount. The arrests and cash recovery are significant because the alleged payoff was linked to issuing an inspection report that could have favoured the private company in the RDSO's assessment of its plant and machinery.
