Capital clampdown creates ripples in UP
LUCKNOW, Oct. 10 -- Student leaders and Opposition parties on Friday alleged detentions and house arrests across Uttar Pradesh districts on Friday ahead of the protest announced by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Saturday. The number of detentions was not shared by the authorities.
Student leaders also claimed that the local police raided their houses and put their mobile phones under surveillance.
Former UP Congress Committee spokesperson Sudhanshu Bajpai said, "All trains, buses, and other modes of transport coming from Uttar Pradesh have been stopped, but the youth still cannot be prevented from coming to Delhi. Tomorrow's movement will be successful."
Shashank, UP secretary of the All India Students' Association (AISA), said police are tracking the phone numbers of student leaders.
He also alleged that AISA leaders, including state president Manish and Allahabad University AISA secretary Bhanu, along with four others, have been detained in Meerut.
"They were about to reach Delhi after a meeting in Meerut where the police detained them," Shashank said.
National Students' Union of India national coordinator Vishal Singh, who reached Delhi on Thursday, said anyone found in white shirts or kurtas and in groups was being targeted along the way.
"Detentions include Vikas and Harshit Shukla from Lucknow and some others from Varanasi who have been detained in the hostel where they are now organising a satyagraha. Our homes have been raided and numbers are being tracked," Singh said.
Prince Prakash, national coordinator of NSUI, said, "Many of our associates have been detained, and police are being sent to their homes. We have already reached Delhi, where police were deployed at every corner."
Manav Rawat of Birsa Ambedkar Phule Student Association (BAPSA) said police came to detain him, but he had left home. After enquiring, they left, telling his parents to ask him to meet them by evening, he said.
Abdul Wahab, Uttar Pradesh state secretary of Students' Federation of India and Muzammil Zahid Ali, general secretary of All India Students' Federation, said several student leaders were detained on Friday.
Among those reported detained or arrested were Arif Siddiqui, Saharanpur district convenor of SFI; Salil Dhuria, an SFI district president; and Abhishek, associated with SFI in Bijnor. Kiran Singh, identified as the SFI secretary in Agra, was also among them.
Wahab claimed that more than 500 SFI members have arrived in Delhi and 1000-1500 more are expected by Saturday morning.
Rajkumar Kushwaha, state secretary of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), was also detained in connection with the developments.
Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha national president Imran Idris said, "I got a call from the local administration in Kanpur asking where I would be on Saturday, 10th October. Many of our team members in other districts were placed under house arrest without any official notice. The NCR region is under strict surveillance."
Uttar Pradesh Congress spokesperson Kunwar Singh Nishad said state Congress leaders have either been put under house arrest or police have been deployed to travel with the party leaders wherever they go.
"In Agra, Amit Singh, the Mahanagar president, and Mukesh Dhangar, Mathura district president and the last Lok Sabha election candidate, have been put under house arrest," Nishad said.
"Such an attempt by the BJP to stop people from moving towards Delhi is undemocratic. But they need to understand that those willing to go will reach Delhi. This is a democratic country," said State Congress chief Aradhana Mishra.
Durgesh Baghel, Agra Youth Congress president, said, "Police came to my house as soon as I returned from Delhi. They told me that for the next two days they will go everywhere with me and will not allow me to move towards Delhi. I came to see a patient in a hospital and the police accompanied me."
Daud Khan, a district-level leader of the All India Kisan Sabha in Saharanpur, was among the other Left organisation functionaries detained.
Communist Party of India leader Parmanand said, "The developments have raised questions about the scale and rationale of the police action against Left-affiliated student, youth and farmers' organisations."...
