Candidates create ruckus over mismatch in seat allocation, exam postponed
PRAYAGRAJ, May 26 -- : The candidates appearing for the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) examination for Constable (GD) created a ruckus and vandalised the I-Tech Zone examination centre, located on the premises of Sunita Singh Sita Singh Women's College under Sarai Inayat police station limits here on Monday.
There was also a temporary traffic blockade on the GT Road.
According to reports, the number of examinees arriving at the centre exceeded its capacity by nearly twofold, triggering unrest among candidates who were unable to secure seats.
The I-Tech Zone centre has a total of 650 computer systems, with a functional capacity of 505 candidates in the second shift and 495 in the third shift. However, allocations were reportedly made for 1,035 candidates in the second shift and 1,034 in the third shift.
The mismatch led to chaos as hundreds of candidates found themselves without computer terminals. Agitated examinees soon turned violent, vandalising the centre. Hundreds of computer systems, chairs, air conditioners, coolers, CCTV cameras, servers, signal jammers, and water coolers were either damaged or destroyed. Several rooms were left completely ransacked.
Eyewitnesses alleged that some individuals even made away with CPUs and TFT monitors during the chaos.
The protest escalated further when groups of examinees marched to the GT Road near the Jain Temple and staged a blockade, disrupting traffic for nearly an hour. The situation was brought under control after a heavy police contingent reached the spot.
SHO Sanjay Gupta, along with trainee IPS officer Ishwar Lal Gurjar, ACP (Tharwai) Arun Parashar, and ACP (Phulpur), supervised the operations to disperse the crowd and restore normalcy. Police also detained a candidate who was allegedly attempting to flee with a laptop from the centre.
Meanwhile, employees of Eduquity Career Technologies Pvt. Ltd., the Bengaluru-based agency entrusted with conducting the examination by SSC (Central Region), reportedly fled the premises amid the escalating tension.
The situation was finally defused after the Staff Selection Commission (Central Region) issued an official notice announcing the postponement of examinations for both affected shifts.
Candidates were informed that a fresh date for the examination would be announced later.
Authorities are yet to assess the total damage caused to infrastructure at the centre....
