Lakhimpur Kheri, April 30 -- A 51-year-old handler Ram Vilas was killed following a sudden attack by a camp elephant, at the Dudhwa National Park (DNP) on Wednesday. The incident occurred at the Salukapur Base Camp within the South Sonaripur range of the park as Ram Vilas was leading the 13-year-old elephant, Vinayak, towards a pool for a routine bath. The other park staff intervened, controlled the elephant and rescued Ram Vilas, who was rushed to Palia Community Health Center in a critical condition but Ram Vilas succumbed to his injuries. His body was sent for a post-mortem examination.Dr H Rajamohan, field director and chief conservator of forests (CCF), Dudhwa Tiger Reserve (DTR) confirmed the human casualty in the camp elephant's attack and said Vinayak's behaviour was entirely unexpected and baffling.He added that earlier the same day, Vinayak had participated in a three-hour monitoring mission in the rhino area alongside other elephants without showing any signs of aggression or abnormality. The incident marks the second fatal attack involving a camp elephant at the DNP in recent years. Rajamohan added that "After the attack, Vinayak became normal. However, in view of his aggression today, a constant watch is being kept on him." Earlier, in August 2017, a mahout named Ranjit was killed after a camp elephant had suddenly attacked and killed him under his feet. Expressing profound grief over the death of Ram Vilas, Rajamohan said all possible assistance would be provided to the aggrieved family. Rajamohan said in view of the unpredictable nature of wild animals as witnessed on Wednesday, the park administration has now strictly prohibited tourists from approaching or feeding camp elephants....
