Calcutta high court bench recuses from RG Kar rape-murder probe hearing
Kolkata, May 13 -- A division bench of the Calcutta high court on Tuesday recused itself from hearing a petition seeking a fresh investigation into the 2024 rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, lawyers and the victim's mother who attended the hearing said.
The bench of justices Rajasekhar Mantha and Rai Chattopadhyay directed that the matter be placed before the high court's Chief Justice Sujoy Paul.
"The division bench...recused itself from further hearing on Tuesday after having directed the CBI to start a fresh probe in April. The case has been redirected to the bench of Chief Justice Paul," a lawyer said, requesting anonymity. "Justice Mantha said it is an important case and the whole world was watching it. He said his bench was already hearing too many cases and this petition demanded more attention and time," the lawyer added.
After the hearing, the victim's mother Ratna Debnath, who won from the Panihati assembly seat in the recently concluded state assembly elections, met the high court's Chief Justice and said that he "will make the next decision."
