New Delhi, Sept. 8 -- The Election Commission of India (EC) on Monday announced bypolls to five assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and West Bengal and one Lok Sabha seat in Assam. Polling will be held on October 6 and counting on October 9, with the process to be completed by October 11. The assembly seats are Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu, Thattanchavady in Puducherry, and Rejinagar and Nandigram in West Bengal. The Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam is also up for elections. The vacancies followed resignations by sitting legislators. In West Bengal, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari won Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the May Assembly polls. After becoming chief minister, he retained Bhabanipur and resigned from Nandigram, where he had defeated TMC chief Mamata Banerjee in 2021. There is speculation Banerjee could contest from Nandigram again. In Puducherry, chief minister N Rangasamy won Mangalam and Thattanchavady, but resigned the latter after retaining Mangalam. Rejinagar fell vacant after TMC-turned-independent Humayun Kabir resigned. In Tamil Nadu, AIADMK MLAs Maragatham Kumaravel and P Sathyabama resigned and joined actor-politician Vijay-led TVK. In Assam, Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from Nagaon after joining the BJP and later won the Dispur Assembly seat.
