BSF Jawan Dies in NCB Custody in Punjab; activists allege torture
AMRITSAR, March 23 -- A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan arrested from Jammu had died during questioning by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Amritsar, police said on Sunday, with human rights activists alleging custodial torture and demanding a judicial probe into the matter.
The NCB had arrested Jaswinder Singh from his Jammu residence on March 3 in connection with a drug smuggling case. "According to NCB, his health suddenly deteriorated during the interrogation, leading to his death," said Jagjit Singh, SHO, Maqboolpura Police Station.
Police said he died Friday night during treatment at a hospital, and his post-mortem was conducted on Saturday at the Amritsar District Civil Hospital.
In a statement, Punjab Human Rights Organization (PHRO) chief Justice (retd) Ranjit Singh said, "The incident appears to be a serious case of gross human rights violation and custodial torture. Bringing the jawan to Amritsar and keeping the family in the dark about the reasons for the arrest raises serious questions about legal procedures."
PHRO activists said, "A judicial probe should be conducted so that the truth can come out."...
