Brother of main accused arrested; cops expand probe
Meerut, July 16 -- The investigation into the murder of 20-year-old student Lalita Gautam has taken a significant turn with the arrest of Ankit Chaudhary, the brother of the prime accused, Ankush Chaudhary. Ankit, a constable with the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) in Moradabad, was arrested from his place of posting and brought to Meerut, where a court remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody.
Ankit was produced before a court in Meerut in a low-profile manner on Wednesday morning after being brought from Moradabad late Tuesday night. Following his medical examination, the court sent him to jail. Investigators are now examining the involvement of a third suspect in the case.
Lalita Gautam, a Dalit student in third-year Bachelor of Arts, hailed from Thirot village in Meerut's Rohta police station area. She had been living with her family in a rented house under the jurisdiction of TP Nagar police station.
On May 15, she left home to appear for her examination but failed to return by evening. The following day, May 16, her family lodged a missing person complaint at TP Nagar police station.
As part of the investigation, police examined CCTV footage from the area. The footage allegedly showed Lalita with Ankush Chaudhary, a resident of Kalyanpur village.
Ankush was detained for questioning, during which he allegedly confessed to killing Lalita. According to SP Rural Abhijeet Kumar, Ankush and Lalita were friends and had spent time together on the day she disappeared. Police said the accused allegedly checked Lalita's mobile phone and found certain photographs and chats that made him suspicious. Acting on that suspicion, he allegedly murdered her. Investigators said Ankush later dumped Lalita's body in a sugarcane field in Uksiya village under Rohta police station limits.
During investigation, it was suspected that more than one person could have been involved in the crime. Police subsequently named Ankush's brother, Ankit Chaudhary, in the case. Initially, investigators suspected that Ankit had assisted in destroying evidence after the murder.
However, fresh evidence reportedly revealed that Ankit had taken leave from his PAC posting and had travelled to Meerut on the day of the murder. This development prompted investigators to expand the scope of the probe, SP informed.
Late on Tuesday night, Meerut Police contacted senior PAC officials in Moradabad, briefed them about the findings, and arrested Ankit from his place of posting....
