PRAYAGRAJ, March 8 -- The bodies of three minor girls, missing for two days after they drowned in the Sharda Canal in Pratapgarh, were recovered on Saturday, floating within a one-kilometre stretch about 12 kilometres from where they went under. The deceased were identified as Aanchal, 15, Riya, 13, and Mohini (also known as Raghini), 11, residents of Dandiya Khanwari village and daughters of Ram Naresh Patel and Anil, respectively. Aanchal's body was recovered near a canal breaker opposite Laru village around 7 am, Riya's was found a short distance away, and Mohini's body was retrieved about a kilometre further, entangled in a tree. Police documented the scene and sent the bodies for postmortem examination. The girls had gone to the canal, a branch of the Prayagraj Canal, on the afternoon of March 5 to wash off Holi colours. Two others, Komal and Satish, managed to escape, but the three were swept away by the strong current. Despite a two-day search by police, divers, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the bodies were not traced until Friday.
