BJP MLA suffers burns during protest against Oppn
Bahraich, April 26 -- BJP MLA Anupama Jaiswal suffered severe burn injuries to her face while participating in a protest against opposition parties opposing the 'Nari Vandan Adhiniyam' (Women's Reservation Bill) here on Saturday afternoon.
The protest, organised by the BJP, aimed to express displeasure over the opposition's stance on the Bill, and the incident adds to a series of recent demonstrations related to it.
The incident occurred near the district magistrate's residence as effigies of Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi were being burned.
According to eyewitnesses, a sudden gust of wind caused the flames from the burning effigies to flare up and engulf her face, leading to burn injuries. Panic briefly gripped the area as those present rushed to her assistance. Jaiswal was immediately taken to Maharaja Suhel Dev Medical College for treatment.
District magistrate Akshay Tripathi and superintendent of police Vishwajeet Srivastava visited the hospital to enquire about the MLA's condition.
Additional superintendent of police, city, Ashok Kumar Singh, explained that the organisers had initially sought permission to hold a rally but had explicitly declined to burn an effigy. However, an individual within the group suddenly arrived with effigies, and the crowd surged forward, pushing the police back. The ASP stated that some flammable substance was sprinkled, causing a sudden flare-up that resulted in burns to the MLA's face.
Due to the severity of burns, Jaiswal is currently receiving treatment at Maharaja Suhel Dev Medical College and is expected to be shifted to Lucknow after her condition stabilises. Doctors have prohibited visitors to negate the risk of infection.
According to BJP district media in-charge Rahul Roy, a sudden gust of wind caused flames from the burning effigies to engulf MLA Jaiswal's face. Her husband, Ashok Jaiswal, confirmed that she suffered burns to her face and hair.
Rizwan Ali, the manager of the medical college, stated that the MLA has sustained 4% burn injuries, primarily affecting the face and hair.
He said that Jaiswal is undergoing treatment under the supervision of general surgeon Dr Diwakar Dutt and eye surgeon Dr Suraj.
He further added that any additional specialists required would also be called.
Jaiswal has been elected to the Assembly on Bahraich Sadar seat since 2017 and continues to represent the seat.
She also served as a cabinet minister (basic education) in the Uttar Pradesh govt (2017-2019)....
