Ranchi, Aug. 12 -- The bandh called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to protest a baton-charge on job aspirants demonstrating against alleged irregularities in recruitment exams during their march to the assembly on Monday hit normal life in parts of Jharkhand on Tuesday, while 110 ABVP workers were detained during a separate procession. The agitating students refused to call off their stir and took out a "silent procession" on the 18th day of the protest, even though chief minister Hemant Soren made a fresh promise for exam reforms. The Jharkhand assembly, meanwhile, witnessed stormy scenes over protests and was adjourned sine die a day before schedule amid ruckus over Monday's police action on student protesters. Soren accused the BJP of using the protesting students as a "political tool". "The BJP, like a parasite, yesterday tried to turn the youth's movement into its own political platform. Matters concerning students will be discussed with the students themselves..." The BJP bandh, observed from 8 am to midnight, led to road blockades and burning of tyres at several places in Ranchi, with most schools and business establishments remaining closed and vehicular movement considerably reduced and some other cities. The ABVP, meanwhile, took out a 'Vidhan Sabha March' from the old Assembly premises towards the new one to protest the alleged police atrocities against students on Monday. City SP Paras Rana said 110 ABVP workers were detained during the march, while the student body alleged that more than 200 of its activists had been arrested. Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) convener Abhijeet Dipke on Tuesday denounced the police action on students protesting in Ranchi and said: ''What happened in Jharkhand yesterday was too bad. We saw the same thing happening earlier in Jantar Mantar (Delhi on July 20)... I don't understand why lathis and tear gas are not used when political parties protest. Why they are used only against students?''...
