Agra, Oct. 29 -- In an election marked by confrontation, torn clothes, allegations of irregularities and repolling, the BJP and Samajwadi Party (SP) shared the honours in the Agra Division MLC elections. While the BJP won the Graduate constituency, the SP emerged victorious in the Teachers constituency. BJP candidate Dr Manvendra Pratap Singh (Guruji) defeated SP's Shashank Yadav alias Seetu in a closely contested Graduate constituency election. The result was declared on Wednesday afternoon. In the Teachers constituency, SP candidate Dr Aakash Agarwal defeated BJP's Hari Kishore Tiwari to clinch victory. After nearly 24 hours of counting marked by suspense and drama, Agarwal was handed his victory certificate by the Agra Divisional Commissioner on Wednesday morning. The counting process at Naveen Mandi Samiti turned chaotic during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, with supporters of both parties coming face to face. Both candidates appeared before the media with torn kurtas, accusing each other's supporters of assault. Tiwari also displayed injury marks on his chest and staged a dharna, alleging that SP workers had targeted him. SP president Akhilesh Yadav questioned the treatment meted out to Agarwal in a post on X, demanding that the winning candidate be immediately issued his certificate. He also urged the Election Commission and the administration to intervene. Heavy police deployment was made at the counting centre to control the situation. The counting, which began at 8 am on Tuesday, continued for nearly 24 hours. The Teachers constituency election had been contentious from the outset. Agarwal had complained of irregularities during polling on October 23, following which repolling was ordered at three booths and action was taken against some election staff. There were also allegations of delays in counting and irregularities. However, election officials rejected the charges, maintaining that votes were being verified in the presence of all candidates. The two constituencies cover 12 districts, including Agra, Mathura, Aligarh, Firozabad, Mainpuri and Etawah....
